Sights and Sounds

  • At four months, you may feel challenged by your constantly changing baby and their desire to have new things to see and touch. Your baby's vision and hearing are improving. Babies can see things farther away now. Their attention span for looking can be very strong as they gaze for minutes on end. Sometimes it may even seem that they don't hear you! Although babies can gaze for long periods at toys, they seem to need "breaks" when looking at people. This is why you may see babies looking away at times and then "checking back". Looking away helps them stay focused; it also keeps them from getting too stimulated. Babies can also be very attentive to even the smallest sounds, turning to look for their source.
  • Try placing colorful objects or musical toys where your baby can see them. Your baby may be very content to look and listen while you're busy doing other things!
