Helping Toddlers Learn Self-Care

With a little help, your toddler can begin to learn skills like brushing teeth and washing hands. Here are some tips to get started.

  • Start developing routines for things like toothbrushing and washing hands. Begin as early as you can, and make the routines as fun as possible. Sing songs as you brush teeth, have sink toys or fun soaps for hand washing.
  • Allow your child to making choices and be somewhat independent. For example, give your child some choices of clothes to wear or what toothpaste to use. Be aware, however, that your child may need some time to make choices.
  • During stressful times, like moves or childcare changes, your child may "go backwards". For example, your child may want help to wash hands when he or she used to be able to do it alone before. This behavior is to be expected. Try to accept it without being critical.
  • If your child is having a hard time with a particular skill perhaps she is not quite ready for that task. For example, she may be having temper tantrums when you try to get her to dress herself. Try not to pressure your child, and try not to act disappointed. Simply put that task off for a few months and try again later.
