Combination therapy works best

For children with depression, ADHD or anxiety there is new research. It says that getting both medication and therapy is best. This is called combination therapy. It is more effective than medication alone or therapy alone. It may be because different parts of the brain are activated. Or because more contact with doctors is better. It really isn't understood yet.

Even though just medication can be very helpful, it isn't enough. Parents and teachers are more satisfied when therapy is also a part of treatment. ADHD children show better social skills and friendships. Depressed children report thinking about suicide less.

Your doctor can help you decide what medication is best for your child's particular problem. In general, cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective kind of therapy for childhood problems. Your doctor can help you find a therapist who is experienced and knowledgeable.
