How is Tourette's Syndrome (TS) treated?

Tic symptoms often do not cause impairment. Therefore most people with TS don't need medication to control tics. However, there are medications that help get rid of severe tics. But there isn't one medication that is helpful to all people with TS. And there isn't any medication that completely gets rid of symptoms either. Since each patient's needs differ, your doctor will know which medications are best for your child.

Psychotherapy may also be helpful. Although psychological problems do not cause TS, such problems may result from TS. Treatment that includes habit reversal (HR) techniques seems to be the most effective. HR can help to make one more aware of tics and substitute a different behavior for the tic.
