Stress can affect sleep

Children experience many stresses. These include problems with day care, aggressive peers, and exposure to violence. Stress can also come from learning problems, pressure to be toilet trained, or overly harsh discipline. Major life stress includes moving, getting a new sibling, loss or death of loved one, or marital discord. Even positive things like a new swimming class or a big birthday party are stressful. All kinds of stressful events may affect your child's sleep.

Evaluate what, if anything, might be causing your child undue stress. If possible find ways to reduce or eliminate this stress. For example, is your child being exposed to media content that is not age appropriate? Are the programs or video games your child sees too violent or frightening? Try taking a break from them. Give your child books or books on tape that have playful themes. If you can't find ways to decrease the stress your child is feeling, talk to your child's pediatrician.
