Description

"A series of pocket-sized books about animals. Lane includes enough facts about each animal to facilitate gathering information for reports: descriptions of habitat, diet, natural enemies and defenses, procreation and family life, as well as some fascinating bits of history. The lucid, accurate texts are complemented by carefully drawn naturalistic full-color illustrations. These "Early Bird" books appear to be directed to a young audience, but the vocabulary would preclude their reading them on their own. However, they could be read aloud in one-to-one or small group settings. Libraries owning books such as Joe Van Wormer's Elephants (Dutton, 1976) or Anne Cooke's Giraffes at Home (Crowell, 1972) may not need additional titles. Because it is a level beyond the animal titles in Wonder Starters (MacDonald, 1974; o.p.), this is a good buy for collections where there are never enough "animals" in the library."
