Erik Is Homeless

Description

"This photo essay describes the plight of nine-year-old Erik and his mother Lydia. After Erik's father was killed in a car accident, the once middle-class family was left destitute. Eventually, they lost their apartment and Erik's half-brother and sister went to live elsewhere. After nights in shelters and homeless hotels Erik and Lydia were placed in the Prospect Interfaith Family Inn. There the boy was able to attend school, receive special tutoring, take classes at the art museum, and enjoy field trips. This is not the typical experience of a homeless child, nor is the Prospect Project a typical shelter. Although the story shows that such a fate can happen to anyone, it doesn't show the despair of such a grim lifestyle."--School Library Journal
