Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Study

Description

Anxiety in children and adolescents is more common than most people think (8-10% of children and adolescents suffer from anxiety disorders). This study, sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and coordinated by Johns Hopkins, evaluates the effectiveness of a skills-based talk therapy called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and an investigational medication (Zoloft) for children and adolescents with anxiety. Services Provided

After completing a screening evaluation, eligible participants are randomly assigned to 12 weeks of one of the following four treatment conditions: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), investigational medication, combination of medication and CBT, or pill placebo. Following the weekly treatment period, children and adolescents in the pill placebo group may be eligible to receive their treatment of choice. This study also includes a 6-month follow-up period for treatment responders.

Eligibility Requirements

Children and adolescents between the ages of 7 and 17, who suffer from anxiety disorders that interfere with their ability to function at school or disrupt their social activities and relationships, may be eligible for this study. Symptoms commonly reported include: reluctance attend school, camp, or sleepovers; fear of being separated from parents for even a short period of time; excessive shyness; difficulty concentrating; constant worrying; and physical symptoms of anxiety (e.g., stomachaches, headaches). Youth must meet criteria for at least one of the following disorders: separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder. Study exclusions: major neurological or medical conditions, schizophrenia, mental retardation/ pervasive developmental disorder, substance abuse/dependence, pregnant or breastfeeding.

Areas Served

All evaluation and treatment visits are conducted at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Families must be willing to travel to the hospital for weekly visits. Areas served include (but are not limited to): Maryland, northern Virginia, Washington, D.C.

Costs

All evaluations and treatment are offered at no cost to the family. Families are reimbursed for parking and payment is provided for the evaluation visits. *Transportation is not provided, but some reimbursement for travel expenses may be offered in lieu of the parking voucher.
