Student Writers' Workshop

Resource Type

Program

Description

If you have an interest in writing and you are entering grades 2-12, the Student Writers' Workshop is for you. The Workshop gives you, the student, a chance to work in a professional writer's environment. Like a "real" writer, you choose your own topics...have free writing time...work at your own pace...refine your work through direct instruction and conferences...decide which piece to publish. You can even confer with peers and teachers about writing you have worked on at home and in school.

The Workshop is divided into groups based on age. Each group is coordinated by two Maryland Writing Project Teacher-Consultants, experienced teachers and writers themselves, who have lots of time and expertise to share with you. The ratio of student-to-teacher is 12-1. The Teacher-Consultants offer direct writing instruction and guide individual and peer-group writing conferences. Following the three-week workshop, your writing will be published in an anthology which will be mailed to your home and your school. Your parents will be helped, too, in special sessions designed to show them strategies which they can use to help you as a student writer.
