Tips for Quitting Smoking

You reported that someone in your household smokes cigarettes. Did you know that there are a number of different ways people can quit smoking? On-the-phone programs, counseling, behavioral therapy, and medications (over-the-counter and prescription) can all help. There are great health benefits to quitting smoking for the smokers themselves and those around them. Check out the resources at smokefree.gov, and 1-800-QUIT-NOW(1-800-784-8669).
There is even a free quit-smoking text message service, http://smokefree.gov/smokefreetxt.
Both counseling sessions and proven tobacco-cessation medications are now covered by the federal Affordable Care Act. Those who have tried to quit unsuccessfully in the past should know that two counseling (four sessions each) and two prescribed medication trials (90 days each) per year are covered and there are newly validated counseling and medication approaches becoming available all the time.
