You reported you have not gotten help with using alcohol or drugs because you do not think counseling works. You are right that counseling does not help everyone with alcohol or drug problems. Fortunately, there are different types of programs out there to help with substance use and not all of them are heavily focused on counseling. Finding the type of program that works for you is likely part of the challenge you are facing. If you are open to trying for help, a good place to start may be asking your doctor or your child's doctor for referrals to different types of programs.
