One Request Then Move

One Request Then Move

When your young child appears to purposely ignore your requests:

  • Wait for a break in the activity your child is doing.
  • Make eye contact.
  • Give a command (for example, "come here" or "pick up your crayons").
  • If your child doesn't respond within 15 seconds, walk over to her and physically move her to the area you want her to be.
  • Praise any components of the completed task, even if your child doesn't finish all of it.
