What is trichotillomania (TTM)?

What is trichotillomania (TTM)?

TTM is a compulsive pulling and twisting of hair until it breaks off. It often results in localized or spotty bald spots on the head. Some people with the disorder also eat the broken pieces of hair. This may cause serious bowel problems.

The cause of TMM is not known, but it is thought to have some genetic origins. Stress and anxiety may also play a role. TMM occurs twice as often in females as males. As many as 3 in a 100 people may have TMM or some form of hair-pulling problem. Many people will try to hide it. Most often hair-pulling begins in early adolescence. If it starts when a child is very young, say less than 6 years old, it is likely it will go away on its own. However, it is always best to talk to your family doctor if you notice hair pulling.
