Myths about suicide

Myth: I will never be forgiven for the mistakes I have made.

Adolescence is a time for trying new things and making mistakes. People admire this freedom and don't expect you to be perfect.

Myth: I can't stand myself the way I'm turning out.

There is a place for every kind of person: gay and straight, black and white, fat and thin. Teenagers are very hard on each other and get down on those unlike themselves but adults do this a lot less. Even if you are different it won't be a big deal when you are older.

Myth: If I kill myself all my pain will be gone.

Most suicide attempts don't end in death. They usually just end with more pain. Injuries and serious medical problems can cause a lot of pain. Besides, you can only feel relief if you are alive. If you are dead, all you will have felt is the pain of dying.

Myth: Some kids think if they commit suicide they will leave a mark forever.

Not true. After the shock, people pretty much get back to usual in a few weeks.

Myth: No one can understand my problems.

So no one understands what you are going through. At least there are professionals who can try to understand and will keep your thoughts private. You are bound to feel better than you do now. And you'll get better at expressing your feelings. That will make it easier for people to understand your problems. Talking to a therapist almost always helps people feel better.

Myth: My parents wouldn't care if I were gone.

Parents can make really big mistakes in how they care for their children. But they might be better parents if you give them a chance.

Myth: My pain is so great suicide is my only option.

Suicide is a bad solution for a temporary feelings. You can get over suicidal feelings by doing one of two things. You can find a way to reduce your pain or you can find a way to increase your coping with your pain. Both are possible!
