Limits of confidentiality

Everything your child talks about with his or her doctor is confidential. However you, as the parent/guardian, always have a right to know what is talked about. Sometimes it is better to allow your child to talk privately with their doctor. Talking about serious issues like sex and suicide is easier for kids to do in private. Be assured however that your doctor must protect your child's well being and welfare. If your child says they will hurt themselves, someone else or are being hurt, your doctor must report this information. Usually it is reported to the parents or guardian.
