Book - Child
"Gr 1-3 Tara and Jasmine tell about their little brother Jai, who has Down's Syndrome. The text stresses the ways in which he is like all children, although he needs extra help to walk, use a spoon, stack blocks, etc. The color photographs show an engaging little boy going about his daily activities, often with other family members. The pictures are well placed to complement the text. Unfortunately, the text is so brief that it does not give a clear idea of what Down's Syndrome is or how it affects family life. The problems are skipped over with ``sometimes he's fun and sometimes he's not.'' Harriet Sobol's My Brother Steven Is Retarded (Macmillan, 1977) and Joe Lasker's He's My Brother (Albert Whitman, 1974) both give less relentlessly upbeat pictures of family life with a retarded child." -School Library Journal
