The Child in the Family

Resource Type

Video - Parent

Description

"Whatever the type, the family is the foundation for life. It is here that the child gains his sense of identity and belonging. As we see in this video it is in the family that the child is prepared for membership in society. The current changes in society influence the family. Female-headed households especially struggle with low incomes. The child knows the father in a different role when he is an equal partner in caregiving. Stress in the family is experienced in different instances: separation or divorce of parents, mobility of families, parents who are dysfunctional due to illness, drug abuse, family violence, or the presence of an exceptional child. The style of parenting, often the result of the way parents were parented themselves, can influence personality of the children." -Child Development Media, Inc.
