"As this tape shows, the increasing ability to manipulate objects occurs simultaneously with increasing mobility. Exuberant exploration and experimentation also become possible because of mental representation , the ability to mentally use symbols to represent an object. With the toddler we notice changes in the ability to manipulate objects, both in play and in interactions with others. Objects can now be handled in meaningful ways like arranging or building them instead of only taking them apart. When objects are used for pretending, then the imagination can be employed in play. Language takes on meaning and is used for communication and can be used to name objects, express desires, and put new ideas and concepts into words. The toddler seems to take on the challenge of knowing the world on his own, but adults are needed for continued support." -Child Development Media, Inc.
