"This report from the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry uses the results of longitudinal investigations in schizophrenia to reframe popular notions about course, treatment, and management. Based on the premise that traditional approaches to the treatment of schizophrenia have overemphasizes the suppression of acute, disruptive symptoms, the report offers hope for the long-term adjustment potential of individuals suffering from schizophrenia. The multidimensional treatment approach proposed in this report views the individual with schizophrenia from an adult developmental perspective, focusing on different stage-specific disabilities and needs. Another vital aspect of this longitudinal treatment approach is the integration of pharmacotherapeutic and psychosocial interventions. The effect of deinstitutionalization on patient with schizophrenia is also documented, along with recommendations for modifying mental health service delivery."--(www.appi.org)
