When to Start Solid Foods

When to Start Solid Foods

Some parents think giving their baby solid foods early may help them sleep through the night. However there is no scientific evidence to support this. Babies who are given solid foods do not sleep any better. In fact, giving your baby solid foods too early may put them at risk for unhealthy weight gain or diabetes. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants be fed only breast milk until they are about 4-6 months of age. Some parents may choose formula for the first 4-6 months. This is okay also. Then it is appropriate to start your baby on simple solid foods, such a rice cereal with iron. Talk to your pediatrician if you are unsure about when to start your baby on solid foods.
