Asperger's Syndrome - Social Behavior

How do children with AS act?

  • The child does not seem to know rules of social conduct.
  • Children may say or do things that are embarrassing or annoying. This behavior is not done on purpose.
  • When children learn rules, they strictly enforce them.

Why do social skills need to be taught?

  • Most children want to have friends.
  • If children don't have friends, they may feel badly about themselves.

How can parents help?

  • Parents can teach specific skills.
  • Watch your child play. Notice how he plays with other children.
  • Find a social skills group or AS group.
  • Have your child practice social skills.
  • Have your child invite another child over.
  • Help plan a "no fail" activity (movies, bowling).
  • Enroll your child in an after school activity.
