The Evans-Haynes Burn Unit at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University was founded in 1947 by Dr. Everett I. Evans and is the oldest civilian burn facility in the United States. After the death of Dr. Evans, Dr. B.W. Haynes directed the burn center for 36 years. The burn unit is a 12-bed facility with four designated intensive care unit beds, 2 step-down beds and six floor beds. The burn center averages 220 admissions and 1200 outpatient visits per year including pediatric and adult burn patients. The Burn Unit serves as a regional resource for the care of acute burns as well as the reconstructive needs of burn survivors and has the capacity to provide care for people injured as a result of fire, chemicals, scalds, and electrical injuries. It is associated with a Level I Trauma Unit.
