Treatment for the special needs child
There is no cure for any of the known causes of mental retardation. A main goal of treatment should be for your child to feel happy and understand his or her limitations. Treatment should also specifically address the following issues.
- Other mental health or behavioral conditions. These might include behavior
problems, depression, child abuse or speech difficulties.
- Other medical conditions. These might include Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy,
or Epilepsy.
- Social skills. Special needs children sometimes need help learning how to
get along with peers and make friends. Sometimes it is hard for them to put themselves in
"other people's shoes". They don't always recognize subtle social cues. Teaching basic
social skills can increase confidence and give help them make lasting friends.
- Living independently. A major goal for MR children is to be able to live
independently as adults. Occupational therapy can address this. It teaches daily living
skills such as grooming, shopping and preparing meals.
