Choosing and Using a Diaper Bag
Choosing a diaper bag:
Your days of traveling light are over, but with a little practice, you'll discover how
helpful a diaper bag can be. Don't leave home without it! It can help you and your baby stay
comfortable whether you're leaving home for an afternoon or a week. Here are some tips for choosing a diaper bag:
- Try out different sizes and styles to find one that is comfortable. Remember, you may
need to carry this bag while walking, using public transportation, or traveling
- You may want to choose a bag that is expandable or roomy enough to grow into.
- A waterproof bag with a shoulder strap can be very helpful.
- Consider whether the bag is easily wiped clean or laundered.
- Look for a bag with multiple compartments. An insulated pocket for bottles works well.
Having one waterproof compartment can be a plus for storing wet diapers or other leaky items
- A zipper closing for the main compartment can come in handy when you have only one free hand.
- A removable changing pad can save you the worry of looking for a clean surface as well as the fear
of ruining your friend's couch!
- Choose a bag that also has room for you, as it may need to double as your purse.
- Color may not seem a big deal, but you may be more comfortable with some decorative schemes than others.
Packing your diaper bag:
- If you are in doubt about packing something, pack it! It's better to have
too much than to be missing something you really could have used.
- Restock your diaper bag frequently
- Not all of these items will be for you! As you get to know your baby, feel free to take
out or add items so that your diaper bag is tailored to your baby's and your needs.
Things to pack in a diaper bag:
- Diapers, of course. Pack more than you think you'll need. Some parents prefer to use
disposable diapers for outings or trips even if they normally use cloth diapers at home. Bring whatever
feels comfortable for your baby and you.
- Waterproof changing pad. A towel or cloth diaper also can be used, but won't protect
carpets or furniture.
- Diaper wipes in travel size containers or packed into a sandwich bag. If your baby has sensitive
skin you may want to pack cotton balls that can be used with warm water.
- Plastic bags to store dirty diapers if there is no trash can.
- Bottles of water, formula, or juice (if your baby is old enough) for feedings or to tide
your baby over between feedings. You may feel certain situations are inappropriate for breast-feeding or
you may not be comfortable breast-feeding in public.
- Cloth diaper for burping
- Extra clothes-one or two sets depending on the length of your outing.
- Extra sweater or blanket
- Pacifier
- Toys can be added or removed so that they continue to be age appropriate. Taking
along an item that provides comfort or security can be helpful.
- Sunscreen
- Snacks for mom and baby, as well as plastic spoons
