Getting Help with Alcohol or Drug Use

Problems with alcohol and drugs are common and, if left untreated, can destroy lives. Alcohol and drug use hurts people and their families. Children struggle when their parent has an alcohol or drug problem.

It is hard to admit to having an alcohol or drug problems, but admitting it is the first step to recovery. People with an alcohol or drug problem need help. Few people with an alcohol or drug problem can stop one their own. Help is needed.

The Treatment Referral Routing Service:

• Can help you find local treatment programs and support groups
• Free, confidence, 24-hour, 365-days-a-year service
• Call 1-800-662-HELP (4357) or go to www.samhsa.gov/treatment.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

• Groups of men and women who are all recovering from alcohol or drug addiction share their stories, strength, and hope.
• There are no membership dues or fees.
• To find a meeting, go to www.aa.org or www.na.org
• You may also be able to find a meeting by doing an internet searching with AA (or NA) and the name of the city/town where you live.

If left untreated, alcohol and drug problems can lead to:

• Overdose
• Dependence
• Poor health
• Accidents
• Legal problems
• Destroyed relationships
• Harming your children
• Development of other problems, like depression or anxiety
